The Inca Trail is a hiking trail in Peru that leads to the ancient city of Machu Picchu. The trail was built by the Incas over 500 years ago and it is one of the most famous hikes in South America. It starts at the Sacred Valley near Cusco and ends at Machu Picchu, passing through several different types of terrain including mountains, valleys, cloud forests, and ruins along the way.
The Inca Trail offers hikers an incredible experience as they journey through some of Peru’s most stunning landscapes and witness its rich cultural heritage firsthand. Along the way, visitors will pass by many archaeological sites such as Llactapata and Wiñay Wayna, which were both important places during the Inca Empire.
In addition, visitors will also get to see breathtaking views from various mountain passes like Dead Woman’s Pass (located at 4,200 meters / 13,779 feet above sea level) or Runkurakay Pass (3760 meters / 12,335 feet above sea level). Hiking this iconic trail requires preparation as it involves long hours of walking each day with steep ascents and descents throughout.
