Our Cusco city tour is intended to take you to the city’s most significant sites. At 1:00 pm, we will pick you up from your accommodation. Then, the tour will begin.
The Cusco Cathedral will be our first stop. This massive stone building was constructed between 1560 and 1664. There are many works of Catholic sacred art throughout the cathedral. The Cusco Art School’s paintings are the most striking.
The Convent of Santo Domingo and the Qorikancha will be our next stop. Qorikancha was the center of Incan religion and was considered a sacred place. It was the site of many important ceremonies and festivals, and was visited by people from all over the empire. After the Spanish conquest of Peru, the temple was destroyed and the stones were used to build the nearby Santo Domingo Church.
Today, the ruins of Qorikancha are a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the ruins and learn about the Inca culture and religion.
After that, we’ll go to Sacsayhuaman, which is near Cusco. Sacsayhuaman was built in the 15th century and is considered to be one of the most impressive Inca architectural achievements. The stone walls of the fortress are made of enormous stones, some of which weigh up to 200 tons. The stones fit together perfectly, without the use of mortar.
We’ll explore the adjacent Inca site of Qenqo after Sacsayhuaman. Nowadays, historians still debate about the purpose for which Qenqo was built. Complex stone carvings that mimic snakes can be found in some areas of this archaeological site.
The Tambomachay archaeological site will be our next visit. It is believed that Tambomachay was an Inca ceremonial center, used as a resting place for Inca royalty and other important figures. The site consists of some aqueducts and a series of baths and small fountains, which were used for ritual cleansing and healing.
The Puca Pucara fort will be our last stop. The Quechua word “Puca Pucara” means “red stronghold.” This small site probably served as an auxiliary outpost used by the Inca army to protect the city of Cusco. After exploring Puca Pucara, we will head back to Cusco city.
