Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan site located in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It was built around 1450 and abandoned by 1572, when the Spanish arrived in South America. The site consists of numerous temples, terraces, staircases, walls, and other structures which are believed to have been used for religious ceremonies or for astronomical observations.
The site remained largely unknown until 1911, when American historian Hiram Bingham stumbled upon it during an archaeological expedition. Since then, Machu Picchu has become one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world and a major tourist destination for people from all over the globe.
The exact purpose of Machu Picchu remains unclear; some believe it served as an estate for Inca emperor Pachacuti or as a spiritual retreat for religious ceremonies. What we do know is that it was intricately designed with precise stone walls, terraces, plazas and temples—all made without mortar—and that its inhabitants used advanced agricultural techniques such as terrace farming and irrigation systems to feed their community.
In 1983, Machu Picchu was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and today attracts thousands of visitors each year who are drawn to its stunning mountain views, mysterious ruins and rich cultural heritage. While many mysteries remain about this incredible archaeological site, one thing’s certain: Its beauty will continue to captivate travelers for years to come.

Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca citadel located in the Peruvian Andes, high above the Urubamba Valley. It was built as a royal estate for the Inca Emperor Pachacuti and believed to have been constructed around 1450 AD. The site consists of more than 200 structures including temples, palaces, terraces, towers and fortifications.
Its walls are made of intricately carved stones that fit together without mortar or cement – a feat which still amazes modern-day engineers. The main temple at Machu Picchu is dedicated to Inti (the Sun God), while other buildings may have served various religious or administrative purposes.
The city’s location atop a steep mountain ridge makes it virtually inaccessible except by foot and has helped preserve its ruins from looting over time. In addition to its stunning architecture, Machu Picchu offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making it one of South America’s most iconic sites.
If you have purchased an entrance ticket to Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu mountain, our personnel will guide you to the respective trailhead. After the tour, we will return to Aguas Calientes for lunch. The lunch is not included in the tour price.
In the afternoon, we will return by train to Ollantaytambo. After getting there, we will transfer you back to your accommodation in Cusco city, where you will be arriving around 10:00 pm.
