Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan citadel situated on a mountain ridge in the Peruvian Andes. Built around 1450, it is believed to have been abandoned during the Spanish conquest of Peru. Machu Picchu is often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas” and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
The site consists of terraced farming areas, stone structures such as temples, palaces, and residences, water canals used for irrigation purposes, and staircases carved into rocks to access different levels of the city. Its location atop two mountain peaks provides stunning views of its surroundings down below in the Urubamba Valley.
Machu Picchu offers visitors an incredible glimpse into what life may have been like centuries ago when it was inhabited by the Inca people. The ruins remain mostly intact despite being exposed to extreme weather conditions over hundreds of years due largely to their construction with mortarless dry-stone techniques which allowed them to withstand seismic activity
